Here in the South we have a cool period of time we call Blackberry Winter . This occurs when the blackberries are blooming. This is the last cool weather we have and then literally " all hell breaks loose". It gets blazing hot after this.
An old lady told me years ago that when anything white is blooming it is always real cool.I have noticed this over the years and she is right. At least around here it applies to be true .
The blossoms are in full bloom now. It was 39 degrees on my porch this morning.
I don't really care for blackberries that much , but my grand mother used to make really good jelly out of them . I remember going picking with her when I was little . I would get chiggers all over me and be scratching like a dog ! And the briars would scratch me to death ! She always wanted me to wear a long sleeve shirt; but no-o-o-o-o-o , not me.Then I always wished I had listened after I looked like I had been in a fight with a cat, LOL .
I wanted to share with you this little cobber recipe ........
Quick Cobbler Recipe
1 stick of butter ; 1 cup milk ; 1 cup of self rising flour ; 1 cup of sugar ; 1 quart of canned or frozen fuit of your choice.
Melt butter in baking dish. Mix milk, flour, and sugar throughly.Pour into baking dish evenly over melted butter. Add your fruit on top of that.Bake 350 degrees until brown .
They didn't tell in the recipe I have how long to bake. But you will be able to tell when it's done. This is so easy and good !

Oh yum I love cobbler :) Thanks for the recipe.
All the best,
Allison
I used to pick blackberries with my grandparents. I remember the chiggers all too well!!
That's just how we make it! My mom is from North Carolina and she taught me. It's so easy and so delicious. Seems to take people by surprise.
Hi Theresa! Where do you live? I was close to you? That's fantastic! It is really beautiful in the south. I saw all of those blackberry bushes blooming and I was so very sad that there were not berries on those bushes! I love me some blackberries! I sure can relate to your story about picking them with your grandmother!
I'll try that recipe, too! Never can have too many cobbler recipes.
Hope all is going well with you in your southern world.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Theresa, I'm glad you shared this, and I'm laughing because I used to pick blackberries with my grandmother, too, and encountered the same briars and also a seed tick or two. ;-)
I do love blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream! YUM! I also like blackberries in yogurt. Mr. Magpie found some recently.
Thanks again for the recipe and the trip down Memory Lane. Hope you're feeling well...
XO,
Sheila :-)
We call it Blackberry Winter, here in Missouri, too! The cobbler looks delish!!
There is some sort of powder you can put around your ankles and wrists to keep the chiggers away. And long sleeves and pants are needed too!! I haven't always heeded the advice either. Clear nail polish on the chiggers is supposed to be a good remedy. Have you heard that one?
I'm glad I read this post about Blackberry. I planted only 1 blackberry bush (first time in my life) and now it's blooming.
Hope I will have yummy blackberries from my mini-yard this summer.
God bless you my friend, Theresa!
Mmmmm, I think I will try this one. It looks easy enough. I love
cobblers!
YUMMMMM! I will try this one out!
Oh, I soooo welll remember the chiggers and the briars! Like you, I was just tooooo coooool for long sleeves! Why is it our parents and grandparents seem so much smarter when we're older?! I don't give a hoot for blackberries, but I love this last cool blast before the dog days of summer!
Many hugs..........
Diane
I'll have to try this when we get down to Florida, it sounds really good! It's fun that so many of the ladies here remember picking blackberries with their grandmothers, what sweet memories!

Ummm, this cobbler looks and sounds so good. I LOVE cobblers and seldom make one. I don't know why. I am going to make this one, tho.'

Theresa, your memory made me grin. My husband has similar blackberry memories.
I love blackberries, and I eat them right out of the package.
Please pour me a cup of coffee because I 'm on my way for some cobbler.
This is one of the first desserts that I learned to cook and it's still my "Go-To" Favorite. I always give it to new Brides and there is always someone else there that loves it as much as we do.
just thinking of you and wanted to say hi...everyone that comes in my living room comments on my cute sign you made for me. Thanks again...so much.

Hi Theresa,
My grandma used to make the best blackberry pie. I can taste it right now and I haven't had a piece in about 32 years.
I will try your cobbler recipe. Now i just have to find some blackberries in the store.

Barb

I saved this recipe to my files, my berries will start ripening next week and I am going to have a bumper crop this year. This sounds nice and easy, the way I like it.
