Oh boy ! Roses ..............

I was in Big Lots about 2 weeks ago and found these roses for $3.00 each. Now mind you I don't have a green thumb. So I need everybody to pray I don't kill these little beauties.I have never had any roses.Well I take that back,I bought a Knockout Rose last year and I don't know if it made it through this winter or not. I am afraid to look at it. Most of these are climbers, I bought 7 and 4 of them are the climbers. And where I want to put them only has about half a day of full sun. Can anyone tell me if this will be enough sun ? And when I plant them , does anyone have any tips for me about soil or anything ? I told you I have a brown thumb, I am not a gardener, but I wanna be a gardner. Help !!

Also we will have some more cold weather before I feel safe to put them in the ground.I wanted to wait until after Dogwood winter to put them out.I have them in a tub sitting inside my backdoor. They can get a little sun there.I was worried about them getting thirsty so I slit the bottom of the bags and poured a little water in the tub so they could get a drink .
Do you think they will last another 3 or 4 weeks before I put them in the ground ? I know this is alot of questions but I need to know. Isn't it terrible being this dumb ?

How I wish that I could help you. My father had the green thumb in the family, and he did not pass it down to me. I know someone else will help.

Good Morning Theresa. I think the roses will be fine with a little water and sun. I've never left them in a bag that long but...think about the stores. Sometimes they sit there a long time. That's my thinking anyway. You have flowers to look forward to. :)

I'm sorry, I also don't have a green thumb. I did however formerly have some of the prettiest rose bushes I have ever seen! Mine were planted along a fence row where they had full-partial sun every afternoon. They fourished in that environment. I would still have them, had my over zealous husband and my Dad not gotten hold of them! Daddy chopped one down when was cutting his fence row and Terry ruined the remaining 4 by trimming them back too close and at the wrong time of the year. I had a long-stemmed red and yellow variety, a peace rose with no thorns and two minature climbers in pink and white. They were gorgeous till the men in my life destroyed them! Good luck with yours. I don't think you'll find them as hard to grow as you're afraid of.

I don't know a lot about roses either. I do have one in the front of the house and one in the back. The one in the back doesn't get as much sun but comes back every year so you may not need full sun. I just dug a big hole and put them in and watered. For $3.00 each they are a reasonable price to practice with. My rose bush in the front came from a fancy place and was pricy but the one in the backyard was a cheapy and grows just as well. Both of mine bloom all summer long. Good luck.

Store them in a cool, not cold garage or dark area. Try not to let them get too much light or they will start growing.

If they look like they are drying out, open the twisty wire and pour enough water to JUST DAMPEN the sawdust packed around the roots.
Then wait.

Once the ground is warm enough to plant, without danger of freezing dig your hole.

Make your hole wide enough and deep enough to hold the bush. DO NOT COVER THE crown that is where the graff is, if you cover the graff you will get the mother plant of a sad red rose that blooms once a year. Water your hole well, place the roots in the hole in a spread out position. Fill the hole with water and let sit until drained. Then fill up the hold with dirt and water again.

Good luck

Theresa, They should be fine with a half day of sun! As far as when to plant them...wait until the ground is warm! In the mean time don't let them dry out. My grandmother was a rose queen! My mother has always had good luck too! I do okay with them...I just don't like to maintain them...they are pretty high maintainence! I do have one Climber right now, and that is all make time for. :) Good luck! Nancy

Hi Thersa, I have never had roses but my mother-in-law did. Her rose bed was quite a big effort to prepare for planting roses. I think you should do some research on the web. You can find out a lot that way. I think your roses will be fine but don't over water them. I'm excited for you. Start studying and your thumb will turn green. Smile.

Good morning Theresa, I just read your comment on my post. That print does not have glass and that is how I got such a good shot. Glass is such a deterrent to getting a good photo.

Come over today, I have a great read for you to think about. I think you will like it. I wanted to share it with my friends.

I agree with your thought of our readers when we were young. By the way I once thought we were close to my age but you are much younger. 'BRAT' I love you anyway...Jeanne

Awww frowning..I think I lost all of my roses this winter! It was too harsh too long...time will tell, but they look awfully black! I'd love to find $3 roses to try! I"d buy a bundle!!
Love your new "spring outfit" here Lady Theresa!

PS...in AZ, I had a Jackson Perkin rose farm 600 acres, by me. Blood Meal is supposed to be wonderful for them. Mind you tho...it cost us $450 vet bill for our Yorkie!! Dogs love it!

I grow roses here in South Africa. And I have several flourishing bushes in containers. They need lots of water in a well drained container (they hate 'wet feet'). Weekly spraying in this part of the world to keep away fungal disease, monthly fertilizer and lots of love!

Theresa
YOu should go to tootsie and ask her he is a real green gardener. She's on my bloglist if you don't know her website. It looks like you have lot of suggestions here as well.
We'll look forward to watching your brown thumb turn green. I hope you get good weather and you can get them out there.
Nothing we'd be doing here for a while.
have a lovely day\

Hello Theresa, I came over to see if you had some good info about your roses. I don't think I told you how beautiful your new header is. Love it girl. I am planting some Knockout roses if I can find some. I hope they don't take too much care.

Have a happy day.

Hugs...Jeanne

Good luck on planting your roses! My husband loves roses and he has quite a few. The key is to fertilize and spray for blight and insects. They take a lot of care but they are worth it.

The roses will be just fine for a few weeks - no fears!

Thanks for traveling to my blog and leaving a comment so I could find my way here. I love your blog - lots of fun stuff to see and I like your writing style - it's very chatty - like another blogger I know LOL.

Most roses should get at least 6-8 hours of sun. Though some don't mind partial shade. You should soak the roses roots in a bucket of tepid water for at least a half hour. And I heard adding a smushed banana in when you plant them is good. They should be fine till you can plant them. There should be tips on the packaging too.

Wow, $3.00 for roses. What a find. I was at Walmart this morning and remember when I pd. $5.00 for the one's in buckets. Not anymore.

I agree with Mo most roses need 6-8 hrs. of sun. They should be fine in the bag but do water them if they start to look droopy.

Good luck with them.

You are not dumb. Roses can be very temperamental.I love them but I avoid planting them myself. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Sorry Theresa, I don't know a thing about roses. I just dug a hole and stuck em in and they did OK! Quite posssible they could look a whole lot better if I paid more attention to em! I've learned a lot just from reading your comments. My roses get maybe a half a day of sun, on a good day! And are thriving just fine. Best of luck with yours! I hope you'll update after you plant them. Oh and your blog dress looks wonderful!! Vanna
