My grandparents house ...............

This was the home of my great, great, great, great grandparents. Andrew and Marianne
Reid .My grandfather and his brother were wealthy planter's and they acquired the house at a sheriff's sale on Nov. 3,1835. The house operated as the Reid Hotel. By 1846 my granfather owned the house alone. In 1848 he began the conversion to his private residense.

My father has always been a great lover of his family history. He had researched the history on and off for almost his entire life .It seemed like it was his passion. He would talk to me about them, calling them by their full names and telling me stories he had been told by some other elderly family members. His research really exploded in about 1998 or 1999 when he bought his first computer and got on the internet and started finding a wealth of information. He spent hours and hours researching. He also met with some long lost cousins. He would find something new and call me and say "Theresa, guess what I've found out now?" He would be so excited.
I remember when he found out about the big house. He got the family all together and we went on a day trip to Eatonton Georgia . All he told me was "I'm taking you to see your grandfather and grandmother's house. We pulled up in front of the house and parked ,I thought we were at the courthouse. My dad gets out and says "well how do you like your grandpa's shack?" I almost fainted from excitement ! We got to go in and when the historical society ( this house is their offfice ) found out we were descendants we got to go through the whole house.Just the first floor was open to the public at that time.
My father remembered his grandmother, my great grandmother Daisy, telling him about playing on the big front porch of this house. I wish this house could talk, I bet it would have some very interesting things to tell me.
I hope I didn't bore you with this. If ya'll liked this little bit of history just leave me a comment telling me so, because I have a few more interesting stories for you .
My dad has passed away now but his family history and mine lives on.

Oh please share more. I got into geneology years ago and have kind of let it go but I need to get everything out and start again. It got so overwhelming with trying to organize everything. I have my Great Grandfather's birth certificate all the way from Alsace. That was pretty cool!

Oh Theresa, You've have not bored me! I love to read about history. And yes, if those walls could talk. I am fasinated with the way people use to live YEARS ago! I love to hear older folks talk about those days. The sad thing is...that generation is quickly leaving and there won't be any more of that kind of talk, from the people that lived it!

Hi Theresa,
That is a beautiful home. I enjoyed your story and comments! Can you imagine what life must have been like living in a home like that?

Theresa, I didn't get to everyone yesterday. I ended up having surgery on my mouth for an abscess. It is very serious because of my recent knee replacement. If the infection goes to my knee I am in danger of having the whole knee done again. sigh. Anyway I didn't post anything today.

Now for your most interesting family history. You bet I want to hear more. I loved reading every word. That building is gorgeous to say the least. What an adventure to see your one time family home. WOW! girl. Tell more about the house and some history please.

Hugs...Jeanne

Hi Theresa,

Please share more. What a fascinating story. I have done some research on and off through the years. I love surprises, you never know what you will find.

What a beautiful house. It looks like something from Gone With the Wind. You are right, if only those walls could talk.

hugs,
Barb

Theresa, this is an amazing story. I just can't thank you enough for sharing it.

I don't do genealogy, but I've made a few searches. My mother's family has been traced to Wales over 300 years ago. But I know little about my father's side. I put my maiden name in at genealogy.com in 2000. Last year, after 7 years the phone rang. The man said he thought we were very distant cousins. The names he mentioned were names I remember from my childhood. He said my family got to Missouri via Mississippi in the late 19th century. He also told me, he found information indicating we are Mayflower descendants and that he would continue the research and let me know more as time goes along. Haven't heard more from him, but he did give me the name of a book about our Mayflower ancestor who arrived here as an indentured servant at the age of 6. Very interesting.
I don't know how my mother's aunt was able to find information, on that side, as far back as she did, because this was 40 years ago and no computer.

Afternoon, Theresa! Oh, how wonderful to know so much about your relatives and I love the story about your father taking you to see your ancestors home! Wow!! It is so beautiful!! I love learning about our kin. Mr. Precious has so much info on his that it makes my head spin. I'm about the only one in my family who decided to find out 'more' and the story continues. I know your dad would be so proud that you've shared this story with your blogging buddies!!

Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

Oh, I love stories like this one. Please, share more. What a BEAUTIFUL home. The porch alone is breathtaking. I would of love to have been a child living there. I can just see the children running around the porch. Only down fall I wouldn't want the heat bills!!

Hi Theresa,
I really enjoyed your story. I too love history. I think it helps to know where we all came from. There is a bit of romance to it. What a grand house. Wouldn't it have been fun to live in that time. To play on the porch and run through the house.
I love it Theresa, please share more.

How fun! I just started to do my family tree and got back to 1812 on my mom's side and only to the late 1800's on my dads.

I would love to have photos of where they lived and of them. You are so lucky.

Hugs,
Joanne

Oh yes, I would love more stories. Our family stories are getting lost with time. It's a shame no one thought to write them down.

take care,

Oh, how terrific Thersa! The home is gorgeous! What a treat to be able to go inside for a complete tour! My brother has been doing research on one side of our family and I hope someday to enter the house in Helena, MT that my G-Grandmother and grandfather lived in after G-Grandfather passed.
I love family history!
