Hankie Memories ..............

Look at these sweet little hankies I found yesterday. These remind me of my grandmother.I can close my eyes and still smell her perfume on her hankies.
More hankies . Now what can I do with these ?
My grandmother's apron she made .
Now where can I display it ?
It has been in a drawer for years.

I have thought about using these hankies as a valance over my sheers. I can get more of these as needed, I hope. Any other ideals for using them would be appreciated. These hankies reminded me of my grandmother so much. When we would go to church and Sunday school she would give me 5 pennies and knot them up in a pretty hankie. I carried the hankie with the pennies so I wouldn't loose all my pennies. When we got to church I put my pennies in the offering in sunday school.I remember we always got the best candy stick too, from the teacher. I still love those candy sticks til this day. They are hard to find. They are not real pepperminty like most of them are. They are more sugary,LOL,naturally ! That is why I love them so much !

My grandmother used to make these simple aprons out of hankies. I think they look so sweet and dainty looking . I remember her wearing them at Christmas, showers and other special occasions. I am going to try to think of a place in the kitchen to hang it. Because I am not enjoying it in the drawer. I want it out so I can see it.It made me so happy to look at it this morning. It started my day out good !

And I hope you have a good and blessed day also ! I love ya'll !

Theresa, I just love your post today. I have always loved those beautiful vintage hankies. The apron is such a treasure from your grandmother. Your story about the pennies is so sweet. I was never around my grandmother after we moved to Fl. I am sad that I do not have memories about her like you have. Lucky you. Nice post girl.

I almost forgot to give you my thoughts about the hankies for display. My sister hung some pretty hankies on point over a rod n her bathroom. The looked so sweet. The apron could be put in a deep frame and hung on the wall. The background should be fabric. I used to make antique collages. If I was your neighbor I could do it for you. sigh.

Well I didn't mean to write a book. Smile.

Hugs...Jeanne

Good morning, Theresa. This is such a wonderful post, and it makes me think of my grandmothers, too.

I even have a few of my grandmothers' handkerchiefs. I keep one on my dresser all of the time.

What a swet post! I also love hankies, and just got a bunch at a auction. They are all so different from one another! A hankie valance would be beautiful. You should definently displace your Grandmothers apron!

Theresa, I love your hankies. I have exactly the same Sunday School memory about my Grandma and pennies knotted in a handkerchief, though I hadn't thought of it in years.

Thank you for reminding me!

Hi Theresa :)

Your inherited some beautiful hankies! I love your apron too :)

I want to diplay my aprons too, so I think I'm going to hang pegs in the kitchen and put them there. Do you have too many hankies to frame? If you don't have too many, you could hang them in a group in the bedroom maybe?

hugs,
rue

My first thought before reading these comments was to frame the hankies. I think you could create a very nice grouping. Maybe include some pictures of your grandmother. How precious! And I love the apron.

You gave me a smile as you caused me to remember 5 pennies knotted into a pretty hankie for Sunday School. The pennies were placed in one of the corners so that the hankie looked like a baby. At least, that's what Mama said. And, I'd be given a Kleenex for my pocket to use if needed; never use the hankie!

The apron is such a neat idea. If you have wall space, why not hang it?

How about making a quilt with those hankies? Email me and I'll send you a picture I found of one.

My thought too, to make them up into a quilt, even a small one, would be lovely.
As to the exquisite apron, it deserves a frame I think.

Great blog. I wished I would have got to know my grandparents. I was so small.
The hankies are beautiful..my sister saw in a magazine where they framed them. I think maybe she said they folded and used a pretty paper behind them the match the area. I bet scrapbook paper would be neat and use old looking frames.

Oh Theresa! You brought back a memory I'd forgotten!..My grandmother did the same thing on Sundays! I wonder what happened to all of her beautiful hankies...hmmmm
I wish I had them!

Hey friend..
Yes I also think if you framed some that would be so pretty. I saw that awhile ago in a decorating magazine and it looked great. You have great ideas and I'm sure you will find the right idea for them. I have a nice stash of hankies that I have bought at sales..they make me happy and also remind me of one of my Grandma's :)
One Christmas I took just the Christmas hankies and lined them up on the mantle and that looked great.
Take care,
Deb

Hi Theresa,
I love your hankies....I had a friend that once said..."Don't save anything for good because for good may never come".....I remember that saying to this day, that is why I use everyting and save nothing...I always use my good china everyday, teacups etc. I save nothing for good!!!! I celebrated everyday!!!!
Good for you taking those hankies out of the box and put them where you can enjoy them everyday.....
Hugs and luv,
Mo :-)

I love your hankies!!! I have a couple also which I have tucked away, but I am going to pull them out and display them. Erma Bombeck had an essay about saving stuff and how we shouldn't do it. This was a great post Theresa!!

I always enjoy hearing of simpler times. Five pennies for the church offering and you carried it in your grandmother's hanky. How wonderful is that.

I wish times where like that still. Pretty apron, I don't blame you. I would want to hang it to. Maybe you could shadowbox it and then hang that in the kitchen.

My memories of my grandmother always include her aprons and hankies. Sunday school included pennies and knotted hankies:>) Funny how so many peoples experiences are similar isn't it? I would hang the apron on a special peg in the kitchen , or I love the idea to have it framed, that might protect it better. It is just beautiful! Thank you for stopping and commenting on my blog. I am so glad I found you!

Good morning, friend...I am totally in love with all those pretty hankies. I didn't get the blessing of knowing either of my grandmothers but I had a sweet aunt that carried hankies always..

I believe that CINDY of MY ROMANTIC HOME made a streamer out of vintage hankies for her bedroom. You might go over and check it out...could be something you would like.

As for the apron, a pretty wall hook or wooden peg in your kitchen would be perfect for that, I would think. I don't have an apron for hanging but I intend to buy one from someone in Blogland. Just not sure who makes them !!?!!

loved your sweet posting today...'

Have you even seen a bedskirt made out of the old hankies?...it's very charming. A friend of mine made a gorgeous wreath out of the old hankies and another friend has a website called Mama's Pocketbook. She makes gorgeous totes and puts a vintage hankie in each one she sells.
I use old hankies over the valance in our guest room. They are all blue and white of some sort. :)

I would use the apron and not just save it. Also, I like to decorate with the vintage hankies. Put one with an old book, like someone had just sat them down and walked away.

I also like to give them as little gifts when I have tea parties.

I say use them so your children and grandchildren can have the same wonderful memories as you do.

If you have a little one, carry one in your purse in case you need one to wipe away little tears if they should fall, get hurt or upset.

I like to carry them when my alergies act up to wipe away my own tears when I have watery eyes.

Or take to a sad movie. So much nicer then using a tissue or napkin.

I also got a bunch from a friend of mine. I'm going to hang them in my bedroom over my curtains to add a pop of color.

Hugs,
Joanne

Ahh what a great post and sweet memories! Well lets see I have seen hankies on lampshades and I like your idea with them over your curtain. It sounds like you need to put your grandma's apron somewhere that you can see it everyday, I just like them simply hung like they were just worn on a antique shelf with brackets.

Just wanted to tell you how lovely your hankies are. I loved my grandmother, she was my best friend and you just brought back such memories of her. She used the same beautiful hankies and made aprons. So thanks for sharing these beautiful things with us.
